Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1994, Vol 39(2), 165–166. Reviews the book, Bigotry, Prejudice and Hatred: Definitions, Causes and Solutions edited by Robert M. Baird and Stuart E. Rosenbaum (1992). An effective weapon to help kill provinciality and hatred is provided by Baird and Rosenbaum. With a diverse collection of chapters, these scholars demonstrate breadth, sensitivity, and insight into the problems of discrimination, abuse, and violence occurring in America and abroad. They deftly eliminate overly specific jargon from their multidisciplinary selections, leaving a piercing, bare-bones analysis of pain and hatred. As a catalyst for debate and research, few people will remain unprovoked while digesting this book. The purpose of this book is not to bring a comfortable clarity to the subject. Rather it is to incite our feelings, to agitate our beliefs and values, and to challenge our truths. But this book lacks the coherence and systemic cogency of works that offer concrete recommendations to low power groups fighting discrimination.
