Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1994, Vol 39(2), 227–228. Reviews the book, Addictive States. Research Publications: Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease, Vol. 70 by Charles P. O'Brien and Jerome H. Jaffee (Eds.) (1992). The 15 chapters contained in this volume offer a broad sampling of contemporary theory and research in addiction. There is coverage, in varying degrees of thoroughness, of central topics such as definitions and conceptual issues, epidemiology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, learning models, and treatment approaches. For the most part, the chapters are well written and understandable to the nonspecialist. The volume represents the proceedings from a conference on addiction sponsored by the Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease (ARNMD) in 1990.
