Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1994, Vol 39(2), 229. Reviews the book, The Art of Hiring in America's Colleges and Universities by Ronald Stein and Stephen Joel Trachtenberg (1993). This intriguing book examines the methods used by most colleges and universities to attract, interview, and hire new faculty and administrative staff. The authors reflect on the inefficiencies of many search committees, the inevitable period during which committee members describe to candidates what is wrong with their institution, and the long, drawn-out process, costing thousands of dollars, to recruit and hire the best candidate.
