Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1998, Vol 43(3), 230. Responds to a reply by G. Brooks (see record 2005-15480-003) on a comment by A. Barbee (see record 2005-15480-002) on a reply by G. Brooks (see record 2005-15480-001). This reply was in response to an original comment by Barbee (see record 2004-17490-024) on a book by Brooks (see record 1995-98487-000) regarding sexual behavior. Barbee would feel more comfortable if the book was framed more as a subjective social commentary rather than a description of a new clinical diagnosis that applies to “many men.” Generalizing from a caseload of disturbed men to “most all men” does not advance the science or practice of psychology.
