Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1998, Vol 43(4), 286-287. The reviewer states that “The Politics of Meaning: Restoring Hope and Possibility in an Age of Cynicism” describes what can make our individual and collective lives more meaningful. Potential readers may be somewhat surprised to learn that this book is not about politics per se. Relatedly, he discusses how some of his ideas are related to the current American political landscape. He also spends a considerable portion of the book detailing how traditional liberals and conservatives have failed to truly understand what most people want in life. The reviewer concludes that Lerner's book is an intriguing, scholarly work-even if much of it will probably remain a Utopian fantasy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
