Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1998, Vol 43(10), 691–692. Review of “Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions” by James W. Pennebaker (see record 1997-05130-000). In this book, Pennebaker provides a personal account of his research spanning the past 15 years. His main goal is to provide an examination of how emotional expression may affect one's physical and mental well-being for a very diverse audience. Specifically, Pennebaker identifies a broad range of individuals, including those with an interest in psychology and medicine; individuals who have experienced personal trauma; and persons focused on the mind, body, and psychosomatics.
