Abstract

Reviews the film, The Descent, written and directed by Neil Marshall (2006). The film has a seemingly straightforward plot–friends go into an isolated environment, encounter something monstrous, and begin the time-honored process of being picked off one by one. What makes The Descent a riveting example of the genre is its multilayered evocation of horror. The film evokes emotional responses in the viewer through three tiers: physical horror, psychological horror, and mythic or archetypal horror.
