Abstract

The mental health system and literature have minimized the role of parenthood in the lives of people with severe mental illness. This report discusses findings of an ethnographic study of treatment models for people with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder. Concerns about children, often paramount for clients, are not always addressed by caregivers. Clinical ramifications and directions for future research are suggested.
