Psychological Considerations Inherent in a Conceptual Model for Performance Appraisal of Human Service Professionals

A model of performance appraisal (PA),which is broadly applicable in rehabilitation and other human service settings, is described. The model is based on the relevant literature, as well as on a recent 3-year PA project within the New York State Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (NYS-OVR).The elements of the PA model—normative, individual, and descriptive are defined, and prerequisites for a successful PA system are outlined. Potential benefits and pitfalls are discussed, and issues of the rights of professional workers are raised.
