A brief review of some of the historical antecedents to organizational learning and current trends is presented. Important points are the multidisciplinary and abstract nature, and resultant complexity, of the concept. These lead to the purpose for this issue: To help bridge the gap between the abstract and complex concepts associated with organizational learning and the need to understand and see how organizational learning can improve the effectiveness of the organization. An overview of each of the articles is provided to alert the reader to what might be gained from each article.
