Abstract

Peele's (1986b) experiences reflect the conceptual crises associated with the field of addictive behavior. In addition, his experience demonstrates the need for psychologists to reassert their support for academic freedom. This article offers support for Peele as well as the field at large. In addition, it presents a philosophy of science guide to teh controversies and conflicts that often are associated with emerging disciplines and the suppression of alternative points of view.New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common (John Locke, 1690)
