Abstract

This article presents recent information about injection drug use as it relates to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. Presentations from the VIII International Conference on AIDS, held in Amsterdam in July 1992, are highlighted. Several recent developments are noteworthy for psychologists coping with addictive behaviors, including the return of tuberculosis as a communicable disease affecting people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), advancements in prevention of HIV infection, and treatment of AIDS in drug users.
