Abstract

Five Icelandic pedigrees containing multiple cases of bipolar and unipolar affective illness were genotyped using a highly informative microsatellite for the D5 dopamine receptor gene DRD5. Linkage analysis produced strongly negative lod scores in three of the pedigrees, resulting in an exclusion extending 20 centimorgans from this gene. It is likely that genes modifying susceptibility to bipolar affective illness exist at other locations, and the search for these should continue.
