Abstract

A theory construction approach is used to trace the development of gestalt theory and practice from its roots in Freudian theory to its present status. Inconsistencies and contradictions are identified within gestalt theory and between the theory and the practice of gestalt therapy. These inconsistencies are demonstrated to pertain largely, but not exclusively, to the gestalt concepts of ego boundary and responsibility. A potential resolution of these discrepancies and contradictions is suggested; one which increases the clarity and cohesiveness of gestalt theory and practice.
