Abstract

ABSTRACT

Ritualized symptom exacerbation for a wide variety of compulsive impulse-dominated conditions has been analyzed as stemming from a specific over generalized manner of reducing tension that is not deterministically related to the arousal state. In effect, regardless of the specific context, the dynamic basis for the immediate conflictual state, or potential secondary gains, reduction of tension will be attempted by invocation of a set symptom pattern. Treatment of such persons should follow a phenomenological rather than an interpretive path with the phenomenon not dealt with symbolically until its primary nonsymbolic tension relief properties are worked through.
