Abstract

While much has been written about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurring in wartime, until recently, rather less was known about stress syndromes that occur in the workplace, home, community, medical, and other civilian settings. This article reviews the clinical features of the major classes of civilian PTSD and discusses the psychotherapeutic strategies that clinicians can productively employ to treat this widely occurring and disabling syndrome.
