A treatment method is described and illustrated with three cases in which previous memories of traumatic experiences were retrieved and restructured during hypnotic regression and revivification. While the patient was experiencing hypnosis, the therapist presented suggestions which modified the patient's recollections of the prior traumatic events, so that their meaning to and impact on the subject was changed. Follow-up inquiry indicated that the memory alterations and post-hypnotic improvement of the presenting problems were maintained. This therapeutic method must be responsibly applied and is to be differentiated from the inappropriate use of hypnosis.
