Abstract

The concept of the clinical dilemma in the contemporary practice of psychotherapy is examined in this article. The notion of “dilemma management” by the psychotherapist is viewed as a ubiquitous phenomenon in the psychotherapeutic process. Dilemmas in a range of areas of clinical practice are discussed and observations are made about the interpersonal process of dilemma management in psychotherapy that models for patients an effective way of approaching the pervasive conflicts and dilemmas in their own lives.
