Retinal detachment associated with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) presents a surgical challenge. Severe PVR is associated with widespread preretinal membranes that are firmly adherent to the retina. In “funnel” retinal detachments, the edges of the membranes are often indistinct and the access is limited by severe infolding of the retina.
