Total hip arthroplasty is known as the “operation of the century” for its success in reducing joint pain and improving both patient function and quality of life1-3. The prevalence of total hip arthroplasty is high, with 2010 estimates projecting that approximately 5.26% of the U.S. population will have had a total hip arthroplasty by 80 years of age4. By 2030, the number of total hip arthroplasties performed in the United States is expected to reach 572,000 annually, representing a 174% increase compared with 2005 numbers5.
