You have been asked to give a podium presentation. Effort and experience have paid off to qualify for this chance to share information with colleagues, and now it is time to invest more hard work to ensure the presentation is a success. This article provides potential speakers with tips and tricks to increase audience engagement through the creation and delivery of an effective presentation.
Most clinicians receive little formal training on how to create a presentation using multimedia software, much less instruction about Mayer's theory of multimedia learning. By learning about these topics, the usual PowerPoint karaoke performance and inefficient verbatim recitation of onscreen text can be transformed into an interesting and efficient podium presentation (Mayer & Johnson, 2008; Michelfelder, 2012). Techniques in a presentation have the potential to make it more engaging for the audience and highlight the important information you want to share.
