We thank Dr. Deng and colleagues for their thoughtful comments regarding our view of the inexorable intensification of the residency application process and the consequences thereof. The authors point out quite correctly that aggregate data for the population of applicants are readily available. We hope to see even greater transparency in the form of analyses using deidentified data for individual applicants. Only then will it be possible to understand the relationships between an applicant’s characteristics, the applicant’s rank order of programs, the program’s rank order of applicants, and match outcomes. Such an analysis might inform steps that could change the trajectory of the current process. We appreciate the authors’ suggestion that steps be taken to focus students’ application strategies. It is our hope that the more granular data we seek would help students achieve this goal.
