With the awarding of the Nobel Prize recognizing the importance of autophagy in cell metabolism [1▪▪], there has been an explosion of autophagy-related research focused on individual biochemical pathways and disease-related mechanisms. Hepatic autophagy has been reviewed [2▪▪]; methods extensively detailed [3▪▪], and a successful journal, Autophagy, has been established. Autophagy observed during amino acid deprivation and bulk ‘self-eating’ of starvation has now evolved into multiple forms adapted to specific cell functions opening up new avenues utilizing autophagy pathways to reverse pathology such as hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease).
