Effective medication administration education and competence are central to ensuring patient safety. Medication errors are preventable occurrences; thus, all health care organizations and professionals have an ethical obligation to protect patients and provide safe care. Yet, it is reported that hospitalized patients are at risk of experiencing at least 1 medication error per day.1 Because nurses spend up to 40% of their time administering medications,2 it is important that nursing students and new-graduate nurses are competent in this practice.
