New Pterygium Surgical Techniques Require Standardization of Outcome Measures

In the July issue, Fuest et al1 advanced the possibility of using the femtosecond laser for graft retrieval during pterygium surgery. Interestingly, the principal rationale for its use in obtaining the autoconjunctival graft is that it might “assist in further standardizing the surgical procedure.” Although this use of the femtosecond laser is interesting, surgical researchers are still very far from “standardizing” far more important issues with respect to pterygium surgery than retrieval of the graft—issues that need to be addressed well before advocating another use of the femtosecond laser.
