Since the inception of the human microbiome project in 2007, there has been an increasing interest in the association between human disease and altered gut microbiota, and therapeutics to modulate microbiota to treat disease. Microbiota replacement therapies or transferring gut microbiota from a healthy individual to alleviate a medical condition associated with a dysbiotic microbiota has shown immense promise in the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) and are being studied for other indications.
