To the Editor:
Dr Buchwald asks us to consider excluding all surgery-related deaths in our models.1 Doing this would allow us to better characterize the benefits of surgery while ignoring the complications. Unfortunately, we do not have cause-of-death data for our surgical cohort, so we are unable to attribute deaths for this type of analysis. We agree that it is important to decrease the risk of bariatric operations for all patients, especially for those with type 2 diabetes and a BMI over 62 kg/m2.
