Recent advances in pediatric oncology
New advances in the field of pediatric oncology have had a tremendous impact on our approach to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer over the past decade. This exciting era of discovery holds great promise for the successful treatment of an increasing number of heretofore incurable childhood cancers. Targeting molecular aberrations in tumors and/or modulating the immune system to maximize the impact of systemic therapy is increasingly feasible. Additionally, we can also hope that this will be an era in which therapies increasingly spare normal host tissues, thereby minimizing the long-term morbidities associated with our current therapeutic armamentarium.
