Immune reactions due to orthopaedic surgery are rare, are unpredictable, and remain poorly understood. This month’s “Case Connections” highlights 5 cases of immune reactions following orthopaedic procedures, including 1 case of severe metal hypersensitivity following internal fixation of an ankle fracture, 3 cases of allergic dermatitis following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with use of the Prineo wound-closure device, and 1 case of metal hypersensitivity mimicking a periprosthetic erysipelas-like infection following revision hip surgery.
