PAIN IS A COMMON symptom in long-term-care (LTC) residents; however, it's underdetected and undertreated in many.1,2 Paradoxically, inappropriate or long-term opioid use in these residents can also cause severe problems, including cognitive impairment resulting in an increased fall risk, a greater risk of having a cardiovascular event, and even death.3,4 These factors make pain management for LTC residents a quality of care challenge for LTC staff.5,6 This article describes an LTC pain management quality and safety project that improved pain management outcomes and the quality of life for our residents.
