Historical Perspectives: Twenty-five Years in Review
In this first issue, you can enjoy reading the full text of the 3 most cited articles, and the article abstracts for the remaining 22 most cited articles in our journal. To view the full texts of the highly cited articles that have impacted our journal reading community over the past 25 years, please visit our journal website: www.sportsmedarthro.com.
You will notice that the journal cover for this issue contains the first 4 covers from our inaugural year in 1993. Please read our first editorial online (http://journals.lww.com/sportsmedarthro/Citation/1993/00110/Editorial_.1.aspx), as we still feel that what was important in 1993 also holds true today.
The second and third issues of volume 26 will be published following our usual focus issue format with review articles, but our fourth quarterly issue of 2018 will continue our 25th year celebration. For the fourth issue of 2018, we asked our board to answer the question: what do the next 25 years hold for our reading community and what practices have evolved the most over our journal lifetime? Our editorial board chose the top dozen or so most interesting subjects in sports medicine and arthroscopy. These authors will tell us where we have been in the past, where we currently are, and what the future holds for these interesting subjects.
For a historical perspective, in 1992, Dr Cannon was recruited by Raven Press to start a new quarterly journal focusing on specific focus issues for review articles in sports medicine and arthroscopy. After accepting this position, he recommended bringing on board a second senior editor, Kenneth E. DeHaven, MD, who accepted this position. In 2002, Gregory C. Fanelli, MD joined the Board as associate editor. Dr Fanelli has contributed greatly to the success of our Journal, not only volunteering to do a number of issues as guest editor, but also making valuable suggestions for our guest editors.
No journal would succeed over 25 years without an engaged and knowledgeable board. We are fortunate to have sports medicine and arthroscopic experts from around the world on our journal editorial board, who have made suggestions for topics and recommended potential authors for our review issues. We think that our unique format of publishing review articles in a specific focus area has been very popular among our readers, and many journals have followed in our footsteps. Residents and clinicians frequently try to find an array of articles covering just 1 topic under 1 cover, and this journal meets that need.
We sincerely hope that our readers will continue to enjoy our journal and share in our 25-year celebration with issues number 1 and 4 of volume 26 in 2018. Please contact us to comment on what journal articles have made a difference to you over the last 25 years.
