Khouri et al. report their experience of treating 62 patients with percutaneous mesh expansion technique for scalp defects.1 They take advantage of the fact that small vertical punctures in the skin heal with minimal scar and that making several punctures allows the scalp to expand much as a meshed skin graft does to advance and close the defect. This is clearly an innovative approach that will allow surgeons to close moderate scalp defects without conventional flaps or skin grafts.
