Abstract

PurposeTo describe how people with ostomies became independent with their ostomy management.MethodTwo clinical ostomy consultations which incorporated traditional ostomy management along with state-of-the-art ostomy technology aimed at the needs of the disabled person.ResultsThe newer technologies eliminated several of the traditional steps and made a one-handed approach possible.DiscussionThis article describes two clinical consultations which incorporated traditional ostomy management along with state-of-the-art ostomy technology aimed at the needs of the disabled person. Peristomal skin preparation and protection, barrier wafer preparation, proper pouch emptying, and newer technology are discussed.ConclusionThe consultations resulted in ostomy care autonomy and an improved quality of life in both patients.
