Abstract

Silverman-Dresner and Restaino's article on coping with mastectomy offered some useful descriptive information and a plausible account of emotional correlates of physical stages of mastectomy treatment. They did not show, however, that mastectomy is functionally related to certain emotional responses, that emotional responses are adaptive, or that there is a predictable order of emotional reactions; nor did they suggest ways in which their propositions might be tested.
