Abstract

Gut flora is an essential factor in certain pathological disorders, including multisystem organ failure, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. In inflammatory bowel disease, evidence shows that bacteria drive the inflammatory process and there is genetic predisposition to the disease. Extra-intestinal disorders such as atopy, arthritis and even obesity may have an altered gut flora. Nevertheless, bacteria have been found useful for treating disease and thus promoting human health in a natural and safe way.
