Previous studies led medical professionals in Australia to suspect a causal link between after-hours intensive care unit (ICU) discharge and patient outcomes—specifically, increased mortality rates. However, there has been a lack of sufficient data to confirm a hypothesis (or suspicion) that has been largely observational and anecdotal.
