Gastric content and volume assessment via bedside ultrasonography is a point-of-care treatment that provides real-time findings that may assist in the determination of aspiration risk in pregnant women. In this study, the authors assessed qualitative (empty, fluid, or solid gastric content) and quantitative (cross-section of gastric antrum [CSA]) sonographic patterns of the gastric antrum in 103 pregnant women undergoing elective cesarean delivery with neuraxial anesthesia.
