Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), such as pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), can malfunction depending on the intensity of electromagnetic interferences from devices placed during surgery, lead-sensing polarity, and battery status. Management is complex, and guidelines recommend that qualified individuals familiar with the patient and CIED programming should provide recommendations to individuals providing clinical care on the day of surgery.
