Abstract

To provide a simple primer to those interested in improving education and patient care, the authors of the current article reviewed 8 concepts from the literature that have been empirically shown to influence teaching and learning in medical education. They are cognitive load theory, constructivism, analogical transfer, goal orientation (learning vs performance orientation), metacognition, retrieval, spaced learning, and deliberate practice.
