Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia during surgical procedures are preferably done using propofol (2,6-diisopropyl phenol). The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, anti-inflammatory, and free radical–scavenging properties of propofol indicate a probable perioperative analgesic effect.
