The purpose of this prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of the administration of dexmedetomidine paravertebrally as an adjuvant to local anesthetic in limiting the intraoperative anesthetic drug requirement and the occurrence of postthoracotomy pain syndrome. Postthoracotomy pain increases the risk of delayed recovery due to atelectasis, hypoxemia, ventilation/perfusion mismatch, and infection.
