IN AN EFFORT TO MAXIMIZE SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE, THERE HAS BEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN THE BODY SIZE OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS. WITH THIS BODY MASS INCREASE, THERE HAS BEEN A RISE IN CARDIOVASCULAR AND METABOLIC RISK FACTOR PREVALENCE, PREDOMINATELY IN OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINEMAN WITH LARGE WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE AND HIGH BODY FAT. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PROFESSIONALS MUST WORK WITH THE ENTIRE SPORTS MEDICINE TEAM TO PROMOTE HEALTHY BODY MASS CHANGES AND MONITOR EXCESSIVE BODY FAT INCREASES IN THESE ATHLETES. PLAYERS WITH EXCESSIVE WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE SHOULD BE MONITORED FOR ABNORMAL LEVELS OF BLOOD PRESSURE, BLOOD GLUCOSE, AND LIPID PROFILES AND TREATED ACCORDINGLY.
