Abstract
The codes of ethics of the national professional associations for audiologists mandate a commitment to lifelong professional development and learning through continuing education (CE). A fictional case study is presented to demonstrate an audiologist's quest for an autonomous professional identity and an evidence-based practice through CE. The LASER acronym is a proposed approach to CE for audiologists. The LASER acronym represents the following: L, letting go of outdated mindsets and methods; A, assuming ownership of one's professional development and identity as an expert in hearing and vestibular disorders; S, seeking scientific knowledge and technical expertise to offer the highest level of patient care; E, embracing a clinical philosophy of evidence-based practice; and R, reaping the benefits of expertise, competency, and life-long learning.
