ABSTRACT

Several heterotrophic bacteria that solubilized PbS were isolated from soil. Depending on the isolate and medium composition, the isolates solubilized 0.3 to 56 · Pb2+, per milliliter of medium during 24 hours of active growth. The organisms also solubilized ZnS, CdS, and CuS, but had no activity against PbSO4) PbO, or Pb3O4. The isolates produced neither 2-ketogluconic acid or siderochromes, suggesting that the organisms produce a previously undescribed solubilizing agent.
