This paper was originally written as a response to an invitation to contribute a reflective ‘afterword’ to the proceedings of the International Community Theatre Conference held in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka in July 2003. Subsequent events in Sri Lanka – firstly, the worsening political situation in the country; secondly, the havoc wreaked by the 2004 tsunami in many areas, including Batticaloa itself and the surrounding villages – make it unlikely that those proceedings will now see the light of day.
