‘The war game is continuous’: productions and receptions of Theatre Workshop's Oh What A Lovely War

Abstract

This article undertakes a comparison of Clwyd Theatr Cymru's 2003 production of Oh What a Lovely War with the 1963 original. Particular attention is paid to linkages and fissures between then and now (in terms of both theatre and the wider world with which it seeks to interact and upon which it seeks to comment). The aim of this article is to contribute to an overall reception history of Oh What a Lovely War, with reference especially to Theatre Workshop's use of technical theatre. Previous work on this subject by the author (see ‘References’) and a forthcoming intervention (a ‘Case Study’ chapter in the forthcoming Cambridge History of British Theatre) lead the present piece to claim this research activity as a kind of ‘practice as research’.
