Abstract

Physical and chemical methods were assessed to minimize the sugar losses in stale canes of three sugarcane varieties namely CoSe 92423, CoS 8436 and CoS 8432. In physical method, five treatments were included, viz., cane stored under shade, water spray, canes with trash cover and cane with trash cover + water spray. Each treatment showed their effectiveness in minimizing sugar and cane weight losses in stale sugarcane being more in covering the harvested cane with the trash + water spray. In chemical method, five chemicals namely Mercuric Chloride, Salicylic Acid, Ammonium Bifluoride, Zinc Sulphate and Sodium Azide were sprayed (1% conc.) on harvested canes. Among these chemicals, Sodium Azide was found relatively more effective in minimizing sugar losses in stale sugarcane compared to other treatments.
