Abstract

Abstract:

Historically, the implementation of specialized clinical pathways has not only decreased the length of hospital stay in total knee replacement but has also actually significantly decreased complications as well. We developed newer perioperative anesthesia and rehabilitation protocols and combined them with a minimally invasive approach to total knee replacement to assess the feasibility of outpatient knee replacement. Using these newer protocols with a minimally invasive approach to total knee replacement, patients recovered faster, and outpatient total knee replacement was not only possible but has become routine. Furthermore, this surgery and pathway has been proven safe and decreases the postoperative complication rate.
