Abstract

Adapted from an acceptance speech for the Abraham Maslow Heritage Award awarded in 2017 by Division 32, Society of Humanistic Psychology, of the American Psychological Association, this article acknowledges those who have contributed significantly to the epistemological and methodological development of transformative research methods and reviews the historical junctures in the development of the methods since their inception in 1998. From the point of view of philosophy of science, transformative research methods partake and contribute to a larger, 21st century paradigm shift taking place regarding what science is and might be within humanistic and transpersonal psychology and throughout the human and natural sciences. The article concludes with a discussion of the development of a sacred science as the next step forward in transformative approaches to research.
