Abstract

With changes in health care and other societal trends, nutrition and dietetics practice is constantly adjusting and fluctuating to meet consumer needs and wants. The profession has been adapting to these changes with a focus on professional education and differentiation of dietetics specialists. Six practice sectors, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Public Policy/Advocacy, Clinical Health Care, Management of Food and Nutrition Service Systems, Research, and Postsecondary and Professional Education, are reviewed and clarified to encourage practitioners and prepare for an exciting and productive future. The sectors are derived from the “state-of the-art and science” of the existing literature on the profession, dietetic practice group Web sites and publications, and the recommendations of a task force report on practice and education.
